Winter: A hard time for children.

December brings in an air of festivity which makes its way to Christmas and New Year celebrations, creating a magical time for families. However, with the cold weather and longer nights, this season can also be tough and especially hard for the younger ones.

Research shows that our natural immune systems are often at their weakest in the coldest months of January and February. An unfortunate effect of this reduced daylight is a condition that doctors have named ‘Seasonally Affected Depression’ – the suspiciously apt acronym being ‘SAD’. This phenomenon appears as tiredness that is compounded by poor quality sleep and is then manifested by a sullen mood.

No wonder we all look forward to the arrival of spring, as the warmth from the sunshine and the sight of early spring flowers blooming automatically lift our mood and help the children to bounce back on their feet.
