Fighting Franglais to save French language

Using too many English words when speaking French may put French language at risk, said very influential linguists who recently gathered in Quebec to discuss how the language is becoming peppered with English words. They noticed that one of the main causes of this situation is the increasing use of technical terms related to the digital and technological industries – industries that are becoming a huge part of our day to day lives. Yet, there is hardly ever a French equivalent for those new words such as “email”, “tweet” or “spam”. Most of the time, French equivalents do exist but they are simply not used much. For example the world “pourriel” for “spam” is almost unheard of outside specific areas in France and Quebec. In order to ensure the survival of French language, it is truly essential to promote these words and to stop using English words when French equivalents can be found.
